Bidirectional power supplies typically combine AC-DC converters, DC-DC converters, and regenerative electronic loads in a rack-mount unit enclosure. The most common bidirectional power supply voltages on the market are 80V-1500V, below 80V and 1500V-2000V, and the power ranges are 5KW-30KW, 30KW-75KW, 75-105KW, etc. A traditional electronic load converts the energy delivered to it into heat. At high power levels, large heat sinks are required for proper thermal management. Conversely, a regenerative electronic load in a bidirectional power supply can return most of the electronic energy sent to it back to a source, such as the grid or battery. It can perform so-called two-quadrant power tests, operating simultaneously as a power supply and as an electronic load or receiver. By returning electricity rather than converting it to heat, bidirectional DC power supplies achieve greater efficiency and can handle higher power levels in a smaller size and weight than traditional separate power supplies and electronic loads. Some commercial bidirectional DC power supplies can operate at 90% efficiency or higher, which means that only 10% of the test power is lost as heat or wasted energy. This also usually translates to a lower operating cost for a bidirectional power supply than for a separate DC power supply and load at a given power level. The bidirectional power supply can be programmed for different modes of operation, including constant voltage (CV), constant current (CC), constant power (CP), and constant resistance (CR). The parameter of interest remains constant by automatically adjusting other parameters. Bidirectional DC power supplies can evaluate how changes in supply voltage, current, or power affect DUT performance. For example, for any mobile electronic device operating on battery power, a rechargeable battery with a low state of charge (SOC) may suffer from voltage dips as its stored energy decreases.
